Spot Overview
Essaouira sits on a wide Atlantic bay. The main beach handles surf lessons; the kite zone extends toward Diabat. South lies Sidi Kaouki; further south Imsouane. Each spot has different swell exposure and wind.
Plage d'Essaouira (Main Bay)
Sandy beach break, protected by the island — ideal surf lessons and longboarding. Best surf morning Oct–Mar and calm summer mornings. Kitesurf zone on the northern section when wind fills in. Schools meet at 29 Av. Moulay Youssef.
Diabat & Oued Ksob Lagoon
South of the bay — flat water lagoon and river mouth. Popular kitesurf and wingfoil zone; less surf unless swell wraps in. Beautiful empty beach, camel rides, fewer crowds.
Sidi Kaouki (25 km south)
Open Atlantic beach — more powerful waves, less wind shadow than Essaouira bay. Great for intermediate surf and downwind kite runs back to Essaouira. Half-day trips from €30/person with transport.
Imsouane (90 km south)
Morocco's longest right-hand point — 200–400 m rides on solid swell. Best Oct–Mar, mid to high tide. Full-day guided trips from €50/person. Not for absolute beginners.
Cape Sim & Secret Spots
North of Essaouira — reef and rock setups for experienced surfers on specific swells. Local guide essential. Less kite traffic.
Kitesurf Zones
Main launch: Essaouira bay and Diabat lagoon. Side-shore wind from NE–NW April–October, 15–30 knots afternoons. IKO schools provide BBTalkin radio coaching. Beginners stay in waist-deep water; advanced ride to Sidi Kaouki on downwind trips.
