Surf Lessons in Essaouira for Every Level | From €30

TL;DR

Surf lessons in Essaouira from €30 for 2 hours in a group of four. What beginners, intermediates and confident surfers actually do in the bay, at Sidi Kaouki and on a 6-hour pack at €87.

Surf lessons in Essaouira: what each level actually does in two hours

A group surf lesson in Essaouira is €30 for two hours, with board and wetsuit, and no more than four students. Semi-private (two people) is €40 each. Private is €50. A six-hour pack, three mornings, is €87 in a group and €140 private. Twelve hours is €166 group and €275 private. The hour does not look the same if you have never stood up and if you already paddle out alone.

What happens if you have never surfed?

You stay in the bay, on sand, on a soft board. Mogador Island takes the edge off the Atlantic swell, so the first waves are whitewater, not a pitching lip. The two hours break down roughly like this: a short safety talk, pop-up practice on the sand until the movement is boring, then most of the time in the water with the coach putting the board under you as the foam arrives. Standing on the first morning is common. Riding a green face to the beach is not the promise, and anyone who sells that for a first session is guessing.

Kids are a separate price. Ages 6 to 12 in a group are €25 for the single session, not the adult €30. Private for a small child is still €50, because one coach's full attention does not get cheaper. Family sessions, parents and children together, are booked as a group of four or as a private if the ages are too far apart to share one explanation.

Lessons run in the morning. By early afternoon the trade wind stands up and the bay surface is no longer the clean sheet you want for a first take-off. If your flight lands at Marrakech at 2 pm, the lesson is the next morning. The drive is two and a half hours. We do not put a beginner in the water at dusk to "use the day".

What changes once you can stand on whitewater?

The sand drill gets shorter. You paddle. You start looking at the shoulder instead of only the foam. The coach stops pushing every wave and starts telling you which one to let go. This is still the bay on most days. Sidi Kaouki, 25 km south, is an open beach with more power. A half-day there with transport, coach, board and wetsuit starts at €40 per person when the group is large and is €70 per person for two people. It is not the second lesson of a holiday. It is the lesson after you can get to your feet without a push and you are happy to paddle.

Imsouane, the long right further south, is a full day: transport, lunch, lesson and gear. Two people pay €100 each. Six people pay €70 each. Beginners do not go there to "see it from the lineup". They will spend the day inside, or in the way.

What a private hour is actually for

€50 instead of €30 is not a softer wave. It is one person talking. Use it if you are travelling alone and do not want to share the hour, if you are stuck on one mistake (standing too far forward, looking at your feet), or if a child is under eight. Do not buy private for a first pop-up that a group of four would have taught just as well. The six-hour private pack at €140 is the one that makes sense when two of you want the same coach all week and you would rather not recalculate three separate receipts.

Payment is cash in euros or dirhams, card, PayPal or transfer. If the swell or the wind makes the slot useless, we move it. You do not lose the hour because the forecast changed after you booked.

How a lesson sits next to a camp

A camp is the lesson plus a bed and breakfast. Four days, three nights and eight hours is €278 per person. Six nights and twelve hours is €490. If you already have a riad, pay for the hours on the surf lessons page and skip the bed. Beginners who want the week explained as a first camp, not as a list of prices, should read the beginner surf camp note. Where the week sits in the year, morning swell against afternoon wind, is the month-by-month season piece.

Where you meet, and which language you get

The meeting point is the beach base at 29 Avenue Moulay Youssef, a ten- to fifteen-minute walk from the medina. You do not hunt for a flag in a car park. Coaches teach in French, English, Arabic, German, Spanish or Italian. Say which one you need when you write. A mixed group follows the language everyone in that four can follow. If you need German and the other three are French, say so and we split or switch the coach rather than leaving you with a mime show.

Bring swimwear, sunscreen and a towel. The wetsuit is a 3/2 in the warm months and a 4/3 from the cold ones. You do not buy one at the airport. If you already own a board and only want a coach, storage for the board is €3 a day. The lesson price does not drop because you brought foam from home. You are paying for the hour in the water, not for the hire.

Book the level you are, not the level in the video

Tell us how many times you have stood up, not the name of a manoeuvre you hope to learn. We answer with the bay or with Sidi Kaouki, and with group or private.
